About VID PID Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives – Steps To Succeed

Posted by inspectortech on December 11, 2008

FixFakeFlash from SOSFakeFlash, explains steps to rescue a fake flash (counterfeit) drive. How you can try to return it to its true size. Wrestling with FrankenFlash drives to make them useful is a mystery to most victims of fake flash drive purchases. The information FixFakeFlash has for you comes from the efforts of fake flash victims who succeeded in repairing their drives.

Before you begin, please read: Should You Repair A Fake USB Flash (Pen) Drive? from TechChips. Update September 23th, 2009.

Important Update on Chipgenius 20101207,  please read:

Chip Genius – The Good And The Bad About This Software In Identify Flash Memory Chips And Repairing Fake Hacked Memory. How Useful Is Chipgenius?

Important Update on repairing flash memory cards to original capacity from TechChips  20110713.

Fixing Fake SD SDHC Cards, Is It Possible? What Are The Problems And Challenges? What Software To Use To Test For Flash Memory Fake Chips. Is There A Free Download To Check Flash Drives And Memory Cards Size?

To repair counterfeit (fake) flash drives you need the VID and the PID for a flash drive. This will help you determine the software tool required to perform a low level reformatting (commonly known as reflashing). Reformatting in an operating system is “high level” and can not repair the drive. The controller on the flash drive has been reprogrammed to lie – this is why you normally need a special software tool. They exist and are available, but you need to know which one you must use for your drive.

The VID is the Vendor information, the PID is the flash chip controller information. The PID is supposed to identify the chip set family for a software reprogramming tool. How to find this information? The easiest way is to download a program called chipgenius – it will read the drive for you. Only if chipgenius does not find any useful information or the information does not match anything known on the internet should you consider taking your USB flash drive apart. Some drives do not come apart easily so avoid this unless you have no other choice. In most cases you will not have to consider doing this.

Update 20091023: Please consult the new FAQ at FixFakeFlash Inspectortech for important information on repairing fake flash memory items before you attempt to repair.

Follow these steps to begin the journey to fix and repair your fake USB flash drive to its real size:

Step 1 – Identify your flash drive VID and PID.
Step 2 – Find the Right software tool
Step 3 – Trouble Shooting – Understanding about VID’s and PID’s for Fake flash drives
Step 4 – Preparing to reprogramme your fake
Step 5 – Share your solution

Please be sure to read this entire article before you attempt to repair your fake flash USB drive, do not take short cuts.

Step 1 – Identify your flash drives VID and PID.

Download chipgenius, this program will automatically detect an inserted flash drive and read out the 4 digit VID code and 4 digit PID code.

http://www.mydigit.cn/mytool/ChipGenius.rar

If you don’t have software that can unzip the “rar” format, please get the software 7-zip from:

http://www.7-zip.org/

Step 2 – Find the Right software tool

Once you have the VID and PID you can begin your search for a tool to fix your counterfeit flash drive and return it to its true size. In your journey to make your fake flash drive real, you need to be aware there is a risk of losing your drive if you use the wrong tool. It is a gamble. Many people win, restoring their flash drive, others loose. There is no 100% guarantee you will succeed. If you are stuck with a fake, there is no harm in trying. The Frankenflash drive is useless and dangerous to use, unless you can restore it to its true size.

You can search fixfakeflash.wordpress.com to see if there are any reported solutions that match for your VID, PID, vendor and product information – use the search box and the categories menu. You might be lucky – a solution already documented. You can also search SOSFakeflash.wordpress.com for information reported on VID AND PID, and the manufacturers.

SOSFakeFlash is the main site for discussion and sharing on ideas to fix fake USB flash drives at the moment. You may leave comments on the different solution posts at this site to share your repair experience.

Right now software tools are not available for download at our sites. Internet etiquette is to reference the sites that made them available in the first place. You should visit the site most of us use. We don’t advise using a site in the orient – the interfaces for the flashing programs frequently not in English; the risk of virus and or Trojan greater. Whatever site you download from – make sure never to open but instead to save the file to disk. Then run your virus scanner to examine the file you downloaded before unpacking or executing.

This is the site we use most – they have been busy building a collection and it grows all the time:

http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=iflash

Translated to English (recommended)

If the file passes your virus scanning, you can now unpack the file. Continue to read the rest of this article before using the program.

Step 3 – Trouble Shooting – Understanding about VID’s and PID’s for Fake flash drives

The wrong VID and PID can cause an operating system not to recognize the flash drive as a USB device. It can also cause a computer to “Lock Up” – Freeze. In some cases the counterfeit reprogrammer is an armature and does not know how to use the tools properly. In other cases the fake flash reprogrammer switched to another batch of drives and forgot to reset the tool to the new VID and or PID. The software tool(s) will carry out the reprogramming of the drive but it will write the PID and VID as identified in the software tool he used. Because of this, you should research carefully based on the information provided by chipgenius. It is also why we want to do articles with VID and PID information to make it easier for you to succeed. As we have mentioned, if the wrong tool is used the drive will not be detected (good) or if manual selections are used the drive can be damaged (bad).

Even if the VID and PID are not exactly correct, if it is the same chip family (PID range) – it may still be possible to carry out the repair. Unfortunately when you do the repair the wrong VID and PID is carried over – not much of an issue as you only need to succeed in reflashing once.

In most cases the VID and PID for a fake flash drive is correct or good enough for your purposes.

If when using Chipgenius you didn’t find a match to hunt for the correct software to use, you still have an option – manually disassemble the drive if the model allows this. Do so with care. Locate the little black square chip on the drive – it is the flash chip controller. Read the beginning identification. For example:

AU6980
AU6983
MXT6208
MXT8208

If your drive is not glued to the bottom casing you can examine and record the flash drive chip too. This information is only useful after you find a tool you want to use. You can use the additional information of the existing chip to compare against what the tool identified your flash drive storage to be.

Step 4 – Preparing to reprogramme your fake

Make sure you wrote down the VID and PID information. You might want to compare it against what the tool reports in the manual setting. You might also like to revise the VID or PID to match what chipgenious reported if different from the tool (manual settings probably from the previous person who used the tool when they uploaded). It is very hard to say if you should revise the VID and PID if there is a difference. Our advice is to leave the settings alone, go “Auto”. If the results are bad, then redo the flashing with the settings chipgenious reported to see if there is an improvement. Inch your way to success.

If you took your drive apart and were able to identify the flash drive number (note this is not the little square controller chip we are talking about, but the flash chip where the data is stored), compare it against what the tool chose as the flash drive. If different still run the tool in “Auto”. If the results are bad, go back and select a manual mode, Look to find the flash drive chip listings. You might have to set a manual mode option to get the list activated. Scroll through the list to find your drive. If there, select it and run the tool again.

We strongly advise that you do not play with the many options available in some tools. It requires a lot of technical understanding. We are not technicians trained in flash drive chips – we don’t really know or understand the differences, so let the tool decide what to do with the defaults. After all, the object is only to return the drive to its real size and to lock out any bad sectors found. Bad sectors are not unusual – you will always have some. They exist on flash drives and hard drives. As most counterfeit flash drives are rejects for major brands do not be surprised to see the tool finding a lot of bad sectors. All that matters is that they are FOUND and locked out. If there are a lot of bad sectors expect the drive to shrink considerably much below what the real flash drive chip is supposed to hold in data. Again consider – better a little healthy drive then a large bad one you can not trust.

Do not play with any partitioning options and do not make the drive a local drive.

Run the tool with no other programs up and running. Let the tool have the full focus of your computer’s resources to get the job done.

Avoid rerunning a reflashing tool many times unless you have to. Tests we’ve carried out indicate that repeatedly rerunning a reflashing tool on a drive decreases its size. The reasons for this are not known. It is possible that flash chips do not like being “reburned”. Normally this is done once in a flash drive chip’s life – when it is being prepared at the factory. Flash chips are different in technology from hard drives. Only rerun a tool if you have to, not to practice or experiment.

Step 4 – Verifying the Results of Reflashing

Once the tool has completed, it should tell you the final size and also how many bad sectors found. You may or may not have to format the flash drive. It depends on the tool. If you need to format it, do so. If you are looking for ntfs formatting and don’t find it, there are reasons. Unless you need to store hugh video files (4GB+) there is no reason to do this. Flash drives as a rule are normally formatted as FAT and FAT32 by manufacturers. It is because this file system is the most compatible and understood by many different operating systems. The technology behind NTFS is very proprietary and specific to Microsoft Windows from Windows 2000 onward (XP, Vista).

See:

Reasons not to format a USB Flash Drive to the NTFS File System

http://www.tech-pro.net/ntfs-usb-flash-pen-drives.html

If you really want NTFS you can read

Tips for USB pen drives

http://www.uwe-sieber.de/usbstick_e.html

The information is for advanced computer users. If you aren’t comfortable with the information found at the site, don’t try out any of the ideas or information please. If you are comfortable still format to FAT or FAT32 like everybody else and of course do the test with H2testw 1.4 to prove you succeeded. You can always do your dare devil experiments to have NTFS formatting later.

Once you have reflashed the drive, don’t begin to use it to store data. You must TEST your efforts first to make sure you succeeded. This is important. You need to know the drive is now good and safe to use. Use the H2testw 1.4 programme. If you don’t have it please read:

H2testw 1.4 – Gold Standard In Detecting USB Counterfeit Drives

http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/2008/09/02/h2testw-14-gold-standard-in-detecting-usb-counterfeit-drives/

and download the software from the links provided.

If the program reports you have a good drive free of any errors, you have succeeded in restoring your FrankenFlash drive to a real flash drive.

Step 5 – Share your solution

If you used this article to help you succeed in returning your drive to its true size or a usable size, please document how you did it for your drive model. Share your solution to help others succeed too.

Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives is a complex subject. No one magic solution exists to fix all drives. There are many flash drive models and chipsets. It grows every month. We’ve written this article to demonstrate the common principals and steps a person has to follow to succeed in making a fake flash drive real again.

Help your fellow fake flash victims – send your solution to:

SOSFakeFlashDrive@gmail.com

We need to know:

1) Chipset (i.e. AU6983, MXT6208 etc..
2) Vender (Alcor,AMECO,micov,iCreate)
3) VID
4) PID
5) Tool Used (name and url address to it if possible)

Optional

6) Where you bought the fake from (the store, internet site, eBay)
7) If eBay the seller id and the item number and your id (so we can try and find the listing) and present with an image if the drive if possible
8) The advertised size
9) Your repaired restored size
10) You steps, comments or anything else you would like to add

If you like you can choose a pen name, a nom de plume for yourself. It is fun and it is interesting too! All the information found at our sites comes from people sharing. Help others to climb out of the fake flash pit and at least get a flash drive they can use.

I used http://forum.flashboot.ru/uploads/files/public/Ameco_UdTools(1.0.4.9)_20081119.rar The link may not display correctly but you need all of it up to and including “.rar”. The download should start straight away. I have just fixed several 2GB sold as 8GB sticks in a leather and metal case that were sold on eBay. They had all failed after a few months use, presumably when the users first hit the 2GB ceiling of what they thought was their 8GB memory stick. The drives all said they needed formatting but failed to format. In no case was I able to recover any data for the users. ChipGenius reported VID 2001 and PID 2008 and MXT8208. The chip inside is actually MW6208E. Firstly, you must use a PC with XP. Vista just did not seem to find the memory sticks. I also found that only 2 of the 3 USB sockets on my XP laptop were recognised, so try different sockets if you struggle to get your stick seen. My Vista machine never saw any stick in any socket. I tried several versions of UDtools including UdTools1_0_4_6_20081010 with no success. Even though it could see the correct memory chip, I kept getting “Download Scan Code Failed”. Eventually I found the Ameco version of UDtools 1.0.4.9 that worked immediately with the default settings of VID 1221 and PID 3234. It appears that the vendor had programmed incorrect VID and PID values. A few notes about UDtools: Each row is for a separate memory stick, so many can be programmed at once with the same settings, or individually with the buttons on the left. It permits sequential serial numbers. There are three .ini files included with the distribution. The first one has the definitions of the chips in it and UDtools will complain if it is missing. The second one I did not investigate. UDtools remembers most of the settings you make in the third .ini. You can reset some of them by renaming (or deleting if you are brave) this one. It will make a new one next time it is run. You can enter your own vendor name, but only the first 8 characters will be programmed. Likewise, you can enter your own model name. I used USB2.0 Stick. The serial number looks like it must be numeric as it will fill lots of zeroes before the number you enter. If you choose the increment option and are programming several sticks together, and enter for example 123401, the second stick will be 123402, the third 123403 and so on. After reprogramming the memory sticks all work perfectly at the correct 2GB size. ChipGenius now sees VID 1221 and PID 3234 but still reckons the controller is MXT8208. I suspect that MW6208E may be an equivalent of MXT8208.

Hey Migus, thanks for the utility MPT V2.4.0007
    I used it to flash Kingston DataTraveller 2.0 32GB having VID = DC08 AND PID = Ef0B.

But it turned my pendive to just 124MB. And when I check it wit H2TestW1.4, it shows that the drive
    has some corrupt portion.

can u please suggest me how to know actual size of my pendrive and flash it in a better way so that I can use atleast the available memory on the pendrive.

  19. Migus said

Dear Nishant, if you have corruption, the memory number that you must put in the program is wrong. you can open your pendrive and take a look at the memory flash number, usually there are 2 chips, the ccm3110 and the flash memory. In my case it was a 16gb kingston with only 1 gb real memory but the flash memory number was erased partially, the program detected intel_i29f08g08aanc1
In my case it detected the flash, first loading the program and then plugging the pendrive.
The only setting that i would change in the settings of the mptv is downthere in the flash selection square. (of course unless you can read chinese 🙂
    Good Luck!!

Can anyone help me? I bought a 32GB pen drive, which I thought was fake, but I still bought it.
I checked it with h2testw. While ‘Write+Verify’-ing, my computer BSODed. Before the BSOD, I could use, write, read whatever data I put in it (I didn’t fill more than 20MB). After the BSOD, windows doesn’t open the drive. I can see the drive in My computer, but I cannot open it. If I do, my computer locks up, hangs.

I then found out my PID and VID(through ChipGenius) and downloaded the corresponding tool from http://www.flashboot.ru/index.php?name=iflash . I ran the tool I downloaded. After running, I clicked on ‘Start’ but, after some time, I get an error:

    What do I do?

I tried the tool mentioned here

Same VID and PID. I still bet the same error.

As per previous comment the ecc should not be open. It is important people make sure that it is not – and check manual settings first as flash tools often remember the previous personsl settings. Your only hope is to carefully open the drive and then check the controller chip and flash drive chip to find software. If ecc was left open the controller information could have been overwritten and that might mean you can not fix the drive now.

    • kittyfireflash said

Why was the ecc open? That should not be. It could damage a drive. ecc should never be open or used.

      • cyanide911 said

I didn’t intentionally leave it open; I don’t even know what ECC is! How do I disable it now?

      • cyanide911 said

Okay I found out how to disable ECC; from the .ini file. Now, I’ve disabled it (ecc=0). Now should I run this tool again?

    • TechChips said

      To Mr Blue…

In your case, you only have one option left, to open the usb flash item. You must be gentle and very careful. Open it to find the little black square chip and decode the information. This will tell you the chip vendor and help you with the chip part number to find a solution. You should also check the long black flash chip. This is the storage chip, also write the informaition down. It could tell you the manufacturer and also help you search their list of chips for what the real capacity was. This information may be useful when you have found the right flashing tool, if the tool does not automatically select for the flash drive. You could then try manual settings and look up the list to see if the flash chip is listed.

When PID and VID info is wrong or non existent, the only choice people have is to open the item to find the real information.

      Hi Joseph,

You mention the flash chip, but not the important chip, the little back square controller chip. That is the important one, it identifies which controller family and what software you need to find.

Also once you have the controller, you need to know that software in a family series have a little database of flash chip models. If the chip for storage is very new, you may have to wait for an updated tool in the family so it will be recognized. Also as these tools are updated, they drop information for very old chips.

You do not mention if any of the tools recognized the flash chip or not. Using the wrong tool, can damage the flash chip. More information is needed, begining with the litle usb controller chip and what you have tried to do so far…

      Hi Ali,

It is not clear if you were having a formatting problem with your Kingston usb flash drive or if you purchased a false capacity usb flash drive.

What were the test results, reported capacity from H2testw?

The program may be good for reformating, but if the usb flash drive was false capacity it would not make become 64GB. Much depends on the storage size the flash chip supports.

Please let everyone know more about your case and what happened.

It’s not in the english language, so the best you can do if your usb flash drive is detected is to click on the button at right side where your usb flash drive was detected and see what happens.

Note: Only use this if chipgenius reported a c’core ccm3110. At last there is finally something people can try – there has been nothing available for this one so far.

    Thanks.

    • Average Joe said

I had the exact same problem with 2 fake SD cards I bought from ebay.

The only way I was able to work around and restore the “true” capacity was to:
      1. Run h2testw.exe to find the true size eg 1.9GB.
      2. Then I used Acronis Disk Director to create a 1.9GB partition on the SD card, leave the remainder unallocated.
      3. Set it to FAT16. (not sure which is better but seems 1-2GB cards are FAT16)

It seems to work in my camera correctly now. One problem I noted is that if you reformat the SD card in the camera, it removes that partition and resets the capacity back to 32GB or whatever the hacked value was.

If anyone has a more permanent fix, would be glad to hear it!
      Thanks.

      • kittyfireflash said

        To Average Joe

Hi Above Average Joe. I could not resist answering you myself. You are taking the route I took with my fakes 19 months ago. Acronis Disk Director is pretty good at putting a “wall” around the true capacity, especially if you know what the real size is (from h2testw). If a person has not experimented with reflashing programmes it is great.

        The problem is…

Exactly what you found out, if you reformat then you go back to the fake size. Memory cards are a little different from usb flash drives it seems. No such thing as a primary partition? With usb flash drives when you build the wall you can reformat (high level) as much as you like, in the primary partition. You have to leave the rest unallocated and that is a danger to some else who might use the usb flash drive and assume they could get more space by assigning it.

Most people do not have Acronis Disk Director software at least not the general computer user and it is not free.

The problem remains on the memory card and usb flash drives when you use Acronis because the false information is still in the little controller chip. Only a low level formatting programme can clear it. Can’t say how but these special programmes can do it.

Memory cards are the hardest to fix. There is a comment at SOSFakeFlash about a bruteforce method:

        Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives

but it assumes you have a laptop, can remove the hard disk and have an XP Installation disk (most don’t with all this OEM OS version stuff included with a machine these days). It is also radical and requires that a person is very comfortable with software and hardware. Everyone, if you chose to do this, you do so at your own risk so you better know what you are doing…

Paul stopped contributing ideas and solutions because he finally ran out of fakes to repair.

Some people have succeeded with memory cards also using the HP Tools, not that many.

      • ITGuy said

You may also want to look at the tool – MKDOSFS. It and other options (open source partion mgrs) are discussed under the repairing fakes articles.

Without updating the the firmware on the sdhc card your are going to be exposed to the problem that a camera can reformat the card, as kittyfireflash indentified.

Yes the VID PID reported by ChipGuenius is that of the card reader
VID 090C has been assigned to Feiya Technology Corp

You should be aware that some (most?) of the fake memory cards are substandard or manufacturing rejects. These cards have been diverted from the scrap pile and labelled by to counterfeiter to be whatever brand and size they wanted to sell. So if you value your photographs you may want to consider if you want to use these cards or throw them away.

  39. Average Joe said

    Hi kittyfireflash,

You mention that a “low level formatting programme can clear it”. I tried using “HDD Low Level Format Tool” (careful, don’t format your hdisk) to format the SD card, but that didn’t seem to have any effect. Are there any other low level formatting programs that are available to the average person that would work to fix an SD card?

But afterall, as ITGuy pointed out, these are low quality chips. I noticed the write speed was almost 3 times slower than some legit 1GB cards I’ve had for years. Makes you wonder what can be done to keep these inferior chips out of the hands of couterfeiters in the first place…

Thanks for the great information on this site… Its great to know there are honest people out there that are willing to help and lend their expertise to those of us who have been taken advantage of by these counterfeiters.

    Keep putting the word out!

    • ITGuy said

I did a quick look for repairs tools for memory cards and the only suggestion I found was to use a “hammer”. This could be the best repair technique for low quality cards.

Disk low level format tools don’t work on Flash media. To repair a flash drive (usb drive or memory card) you need to replace the firmware on the drive with the correct manufacture’s firmware. This is what is done when you re-flash an usb drive using the “manufactures tool”.

The manufactures tool is utilizing a capability on the drives that is referred to in the industry as “ISP or In System Programming” or by proprietary methods that the card manufacture has developed.

Unfortunately updating the firmware on memory cards may require a special device. Uncertain about this due to the lack of publically available information. The could be more information on the Chinese sites.

Hi, I had bought a fake Kingston 40GB Pendrive from a roadside vendor but when i reached home and putit into my computer’s Windows Xp showed it as 40 GB but i was not able to open it or format it. In Ubuntu it didnot even showed itself. I searched a lot but was totally directionless till i stumbled upon this page. With the help of the information on this page i was able to reflash this pendrive and get 494 MB. The steps involved were as follows:
    1. Got the VID and PID with the help of chipgenius,
    VID = DC08 & PID = EF0B
    2. Chipgenius was not giving info about Product Model, Product Vendor, Chip Vendor
    3. I removed the cover of my pendrive and found it to be a C*Core CCM 3110 chip.
    4. I downloaded the prescribed MPT V2.4.007 beta tool for it, first it would not recognise my pendrive, then next day when i tried it reognised(may be something to do with the sequence of inserting the pendrive and running the programme). I pressed the first big button form right handside top corner(one having “S”), as everything in chinese i couldn’t make head or tail of waht was happening, finally when the process ended. i was able to open my pendrive in file explorer but it was showing its capacity as 0 MB. I took out my pendrive and again inserted it, this time it was showing 494 MB and file format as RAW. I reformatted it through Disk Management in Adminstrative Tasks and my reclaimed USB Flash Drive was up and working.
    4. Though i felt cheated and disappointed as I only got 494 MB but looking at the brighter side i think i learnt a bit about the lowlevel programming of these Fake Flash Drives and was able to change the model name of my fake disk to Anant.
i would like to thank all the members over here for their contributions over this page

Hey all, I bought a 32GB Kingston data traveler 150, It’s the orange one with dots on it… Anyways I was pretty sure it was fake but I bought it anyway trying to save a few bucks. Lucky I purchased it through eBay & got a refund in about 3 days & went to newegg to get a real one. The guy actually told me to send it back to him lol, Yea right so he can sell it to someone else. I figured it would be fun to hack around with & it was free 🙂

I’m running UdTools 1.0.4.6_20081010 So far 1st time trying to format It got to about 85% & gave me a format error, It may be because the default size says 16GB & I’m pretty sure from my copy tests it only holds about 1.7GB before the files get corrupted.

I do want to also say I feel for you guys that got ripped off, I got ripped off on a fake IBM laptop adapter that looked very REAL It was slightly bigger but hard to tell, It broke in a month & then I found it was easily pulled apart.

I’m running format again, I’ll see how it goes, This flash drive also easily came apart so I looked up the chip numbers as well.

    PICS 🙂

Correction on the 3mb statement on the pic, I believe It’s around 1.7GB now, When I got it it would only hold 3mb & after messing around with it it started holding more, ALSO IT HAD A DAMN PIECE OF LOOSE SOLDER IN IT, THAT COULD HAVE SHORTED MY USB PORTS.

Will update if I have any success.

See my response to comment #39.

I’ve done a fair amount of looking for solutions to fixing memory cards. So far I’ve not been successful.

I expect that specialized equipment is required to reprogram memory cards as unlike thumb drives, memory cards do not contain an imbedded USB controller. I’ve also looked for solutions based on PC Card (PCMCIA) Adapters (this would eliminate the USB adapter issues) and have not found anything.

Would be interested in hearing if anyone has found a solution to repograming / reflashing memory cards.

Did you use other low level formatting tools on this usb flash drive before?

Was the ECC open on the low level formatting tool? Or in any previous tools you might have used? It is important that it is Never left Open!. Some times the tools downloaded have the previous users settings. It is very important to check the manual settings for any tool to make sure it is NOT open.

If it was left open using a tool, it could have wiped or writtin incorrect information to the usb flash drive controller chip.

If it was left open. Close it for the software. Unplug the usb flash drive. Try once more. If it does not work or auto detect and the ECC was open at some point, the usb flash drive unfortuately is cooked. It happened to a few of mine. The result of too many experiments and low level formatting practice with different tools.

      • BadMemoryBuyer said

Have a look at this post.

      http://www.myblog.bloggybloggy.com/usb-key-fix-mptools-11-05-2008/

I’m not sure but I think Dynet D27UAG8T2MTR memory is rebranded hynix memory and they use similar part #..so this is a 2GB chip. Cannot say why the manual settings do not work.

      • Randy said

Adding to my comment. You many have to see if you can find a version of the manufactures tool that recognises the Dynet memory. Some of the tools verify the memory type found against that set in the manual scan setting. If they don’t match, the drive will not be reflashed. During the manufacture of the NAND chip a part number is imbedded in the memory chip. This information is read from the chip and used by the manufacture tool.

The techiques for flash drive repair discussed on this blog are not suitable for most MP3 / MP4 players. This is because most MP3 do not have a discrete memory controller chip.

The approaches to fixing the MP3 player are:

Get a copy of the manufactures software for the model and real memory size of the player. Reputable vendors of MP3 ship their products with software CDs that can be used to reload the sofware on the player. As mentioned in another post you can try and get the software from the seller of the player. I’m not sure why the seller will go to the cost and effort of sending the CD to you.

The other option is looking on the various MP3/MP4 forums to see if you can find a solution. Looks a the the post on this comment.

Fake MP Player and How To Fix It – Niko’s Repair Of eBay Seller lovehuangfeifei2008 Fake MP Player

On one of the sosfakeflash sites has a suggested repair method (basically a work around) that takes avantage of the partioning capability that some players. What you do is set the size of the encrypted partition to equal the size of the non-existent memory. For the fake 32GB with real 2GB you set the encrypted size to 30GB. I did a quick look for the post on this suggested repair method but was not able to find it (ran out of time). It was posted in the last couple of weeks.

Should also mention, a google search of “RK2608 firmware repair MP3 MP4” will lead you to a number of sites where your browser security software will give you warnings about. So proceed with care when you are search for repair sofware for these players.

        http://active–partition-manager.smartcode.co/info.html

partioned both mp3 players to there true size(well about 50mb less), as revealed by ‘h2testw’. then tested them by filling them up to max capacity with songs. no corruption! and also showing there true size in windows.
thanks randy, and thanks to this sight,

For all of these which have 2 GB fake flash based on FC8308 controller and Samsung K9GAG08U0D Memory chip here is my guide:

For some reason this controller is recognised by the ChipGenius as Alcor AU6986 and the suggested software does not work, so i opened the USB stick and found out that the chip in fact is FC8308. After some lurking over internet i found that it can be modified to its regular size only with FC MPTool 1.19 so started serach for it. In some places access was payed but i found it in chinese site and got it and fixed the flash to its regular size.

Here are some links for the used tools arranged in order of my usage 🙂 (they are rapidshare mirrors which i will keep alive):

I picked up a Sony Micro Vault USB 2.0 640G in Shanghai, and originally it displayed 639Gb capacity in WinXP.

We’ll you guessed it, things became unstable, and it now displays 0 GB in WinXP, and asks to be formatted when you double click on the drive icon. WinXP formatting fails.

The surface mount chip inside is MW8209 IPL290931-1 09HT0415.

I searched on google for the MW8209, and I find many asian sellers of this USB chip.

When I run Chip Genius 3.00, I get the following results :

Repair options for SDHC or other memory cards are limited to partitions or formating. Both repair techniques have issues, if you are going to use the card in a camera. If the card is to be used in a camera I would not repair it. I would throw it away.

These repair techniques as discussed in many posts on this blog

Chipgenius is not helpful on memory cards as it reports the vid pid of the usb reader.

You will have to open up the drive and visually determine what type of memory controller and memory chips are inside the drive.

Then you can look on this site for tips on how to repair.

  54. Hello

I was reading the forum that you are an expert in problems with flash drive. I would ask for your help.
I bought a flash drive from Kingston 32GB that came formatted in FAT. When I make the formatting to NTFS the USB came to see 128MB.
Would I somehow make a physical formatting of the flash drive or delete the partition and recreate it and try to format again? What software could I use?

I managed to open the flash drive and found that the model of the chip is MW8209 (Micova).

    Thank you.

flash disk cannot be formatted SOLVED!!
Recently I had this 1 GB Kingston flash disk with model number DTI/1GB. After I have inserted it into an assembled desktop, which has problem with its USB plug, the message flash disk cannot be formatted appear. I have tried high level formatting including HP utillity, but it was not solved. H2testw cannot show its capacity.
here is the procedure I used to solve the problem,
    Optional
    using Chipgenius results
    1) Chipset MW6208E
    2) Vender micov
    3) VID 2001
    4) PID 2008
    5) Tool Used Ameco_MW6208E_8208_1.2.0.8_20090724_(UdTools_v1.2.0.8).rar
    6) Your repaired restored size 466MB
Bad Sector around 430 Mege bites
    10) H2testW gives me also the same 466MB size the remaining badsector/damaged.
the property on my computer also shows this size and the falsh is now working properly.
“”””””Thank you for your help”””‘and this might also be helpful not only for fake fashes but also for geniune flashes which can be fornatted under any high level wondows formatting tools
including HP flash disk utility. “”””””

Pen Drive fake 32GB Kingston “can not be formatted problem” solved.
I have helped one of my friends fake flash disk restored its original size to 4gb.

    problem
the flash can not be formatted with disk management and hp utility. the of the flash disk
seen as 8mb on the disk management.
test by H2testW before the low level scan resulted in flash can not be accessed.
Chip genius result was as follows

    PnP Device ID: VID = 5136 PID = 4678
    Serial Number: 5&&D87FB22&&0&&7
    Revision: 2.40

I have downloaded the utility, MW6208E_8208_1.2.0.6_20090619 from
    http://www.elektroda.pl/rtvforum/download.php?id=369107&sid=fdf7366bc7a4af4f68fb3d11a4d4cd99
but when the utility was run the following message appeared
    ERROR: Downlaod Scan Code Failed!
But I have previously downloaded another version of the utility
    Ameco MW6208E 8208 1.2.0.8 20090724 (UdTools v1.2.0.8)
    url Ameco MW6208E 8208 1.2.0.8 20090724 (UdTools v1.2.0.8).zip can be found in
http://www.elektroda.pl/rtvforum/topic1450535.html, for another falsh disk with vid 2001 and
pid 2008, micov and chip set MW6208E

    But, when I closed the MW6208E 8208 (UDTOOLS v1.2.0.6) and opened Ameco MW6208E 8208 1.2.0.8 20090724 (UdTools v1.2.0.8),
the flash disk is detected automatically and every thing seems good. It shows vid and pid number different from VID = 5136 PID = 4678.
the new vid and pid on the utility tool is 1221 and 3234 respectively.
So I decided to take the risk and try low level formatting with this utility.
Everything was fine since atleast the chip part number MW6208E was the same.
After running the prog, It shows
    chips=1 Model=MT29F32G08CBAAA_4GB FlashID=2CD7943E single Channel
After finalizing the 4 GB was recovered with about 20% of the volume damaged.
The H2testW test result was also the same as it gave “all available space (3035 MByte”
Finally after replugging I was able to transfer some video files to other computers successfully.
if you need more help am available @here.

I took the SDHC card apart and inside there is one large chip with the following markings on it,

M323AAMD2 in one corner of the chip and M32 in the other. Just below that chip there seems to be the controller chip but its covered with a black epoxy and is unreadable.

The VID PID that chipgenius reports is associated with the card reader not the controller chip.

I done a lot of searching for tools that enable you to flash program SDHC cards. Unfortunately the only solutions I have found are based on specialised (expensive) equipment.

      yasaheb,

you may have used the wrong tool, normally auto settings are advised and to make sure ecc is not set to open in manual settings.

best you open usb flash drive. decode little controller chip and flash drive storage chip to make sure you used the right tool. some times vid and pid information is wrong – bad fake flash reprogramming.

if windows will not format, low level reformating was wrong. or flash drive damaged from experimenting (ecc open).

      • yasaheb said

Is ther any way to us this Flash?

      • InspectorTech said

        yasaheb,

Only if you can find the correct low level reformatting software.

You must carefully open it. Decode the little usb controller chip, decode the long flash memory chip. Write all down on paper, then search internet, russian site is best.

Find matching software tool. Try to reformat again. You may have to try several different programmes in vendor family.

        The answer about using:

No. Not until you repair sucessfully. If you do not perform correct repair and it does not pass testing with H2testw you risk lossing all files that will be stored on usb flash drive. Dangerous. Data loss.

Think of a big suitcase, one that has many holes. You lose your garments inside and you have no control which ones you will lose. If you can not repair, best to destroy and learn from lesson.

Also flash memory chips have limited lifespan, like computer hard disks. Repeated low level reformatting reduces the life expectancy.

You have only one chance. Open usb flash drive with care. Perform instructions presented to find what you will need. Try again. Good Luck!

My recommendation is to not repair the flash drives. Look at this article.

Should You Repair A Fake USB Flash (Pen) Drive?

If you still indend to repair the drive then you will need to open up the drive to visually determine the chip vendor / model number that location the repair instructions on this blog or the internet.

Could you explain. I had a quick look at the site and it list a number of programs.

Which of the programs are capable of repairing a flash drive.

I noticed comments on some of the programs – “Low-level formatting of Flash Cards is supported too. Low Level Format Tool will clear partitions, MBR, and every bit of user data”

This will not repair fake / altered flash drives memory cards.

    0
    1(default)
    2
    3

Currently the value is set to 0. Is it considered open or closed?
