FixFakeFlash – solution MXT8208 controller identified with VID = 1221 PID = 3234, fake flash drive. The drive tested and repaired was a fake 32GB “Transend”. Advertised as 32GB, it’s true capacity was 499MB. This fake flash drive can be repaired using the following information.

1. Download tool AMECO MXT6208/MXT8208 UDiskTools 1.0.4.6 (20081010)
FixFakeFlash comment – Ameco is the New Parent company for the MPTools used in the past for micov.
It turns out my flash drive’s actual capacity is around 499MB (or slightly lesser, I think). Used UdTools1_0_4_6_20081010.rar to rectify it and state the true capacity. Thanks much for your suggestions above, which helped me fix the problem!

When I start udtools1.0.4.6_20081010 it doesn’t detect my flash drive to reformat it.
I changed VID and PID to these from chipgenius changed the serial number from the previous person on manual but it doesn’t detect it. I don’t know is there any way to reformat it. I see that micov has 512 MB flash drive but I can’t see 2 GB.
What should I do?

I have bought the same model, a Hello Kitty pen drive 16GB on ebay (the vendor doesn´t exist anymore). I downloaded the indicated program and it found the same VID and PID like H2testw. Starting the tool it says under “Manuf Progress” the following error message: “Error: Download Scan Code Failed!”
How may I reformat the drive? Have you had the same message and altered some number to run the program?

In this case ST, you have no choice but to very carefully open the usb flash drive.
Find the little square black chip. What is the full controller serial? Also what is flash drive chip serial.
Sometimes they do very bad reprogramming and use wrong pid vid. So the controller chip (little square) will tell you the correct family to search for. See categories on left menu side. If not found, now that you know the correct controller visit the russian site to see if someone has put software for it there.

So older version was the good one? After correction did you run the test again with H2testw v1.4 to verify your repair?
What is your final size? 1.9GB? After correction?
One of the problem with these tools is that they have a list of usb flash drive chips they have information on. Some tools older have information missing in newer tools. Newer tools generally have information on newer flash drive chips and not on older ones. This is confusiong for people sometimes.

I had the same kind of USB drive and could perfectly fix it with this tool. It found at least one bad block and formatted the drive to 248 MB (from 500 GB :-).

Looks like you have a 256MB flash drive. Was it a Kingston or a Sony counterfeit? They tend to be the biggest smallest fakes, if that makes any sense. If in low level formatting you lost half of the 512MB then there were a lot of bad sectors – low low quality most likely. Now, problem is, when I try to use the software provided by the author of this thread, it shows me Removeable(256MB) in partition. H2TestW report shows that it's around 4 GB usb. I think that I should use another appropriate software to repaire my usb. Can anybody help me in this regard please?

Ablaze,
Your best bet if you are gentle, is to take the usb flash drive apart – carefully. Check the little square chip, that is the controller chip. Then make a note of the long black chip, that is the storage chip.
Some times the fake flash programmers do not use a correct vid or pid.
A shrink to 256MB when the testing software indicated about 4GB is a sign that the reflashing software did not understand the flash drive storage chip properly.
You will need to try and find the latest software at the Russian site based on the controller chip (vendor). I had problems in the past with flash storage chips not being detected properly – it was corrected when I found a tool in the same controller family that understood and recognized the storage chip.
What ever you do, make sure to check the manual setting of a software that you download. The ECC must not be open, or you could wreck the controller chip.
You did not say which software you used, the version of the tool. It is a good idea to paste in the software tool version you used as text. There are three commonly used for this vid pid combination.

Which one did you down load? There are several different softwares that could be used for Ameco.

Micov is for older controllers the vid or pid may be incorrect. Only way to know for sure it to very very gently open the drive. USB controller chip, is the little black one.

Based on the H2testw out the drive if a fake and if based on the size of 183.7 MByte reported by H2testw the memory chip is 256MB with lots of bad blocks and errors. This looks like a substandard chip the the counterfeits have recycled.
My recommendation is not to repair this chip.

Did you check the manual settings and make sure that ECC was not open?
Also check the vendor category Micov. You may have to use an older software.
Hopefully you did not use any other reflashing programs beforehand.
The last possibility is that the controller inside is a much newer revision or that the usb flash drive chip being used for storage is also new and not in the little database that these tools use to decide on how to do the low level reformatting. If this is the case you might have to wait. Please visit the russian site to see all the programs they offer.

The thing is first time i look at it throught chipgenius it came up with Micov, then couple of weeks later came back to it and it sed Ameco, guessing the database has been updated…?

you can copy a file called dibujo.tmp and copy many times, if the files are copy fine. You had fixed the memory.

The best test to confirm that the drive has been repaired is h2testw. If you are going to use a simple file copy test, you should use the DOS file compare command to compare the orginal file with the copies on the flash drive. You will also need to remove and reinsert the flash drive (to clear windows cache) before doing the file compare.

You need to test your usb flash drive for it’s true capacity using H2testw 1.4. It indicates the size of flash storage chip used. ChipGenius tells you about the usb controller chip used in the flash drive. To reflash you need to know the controller family to find the right software.
The Russian site reports what victims have found with their fake. A VID PID is about the controller not the storage chip.
Reflashing software contains a little database, on flash drive chips. Depending on the version it may or may not recognize the flash storage chip. It is a wrong assumption to think the lastest version of reflashing software contains more information on flash storage chips. Sometimes they drop older chips to be able to add newer ones.
The only 100% guarantee to be certain on the “real size” of the flash storage chip used, is to open the flash drive. It can be difficult depending on the model. It is also possible to break a usb flash drive in the process. In some cases the bottom half is glued to the bottom casing to make sure it does not wiggle. Often it is the flash drive chip size of the board. So anyone who wants or needs to do this must be very careful and gentle!
Once you find the rectangular flash chip, you then have to decode the entire serial and search for it on the internet. Most of the time you will find it, but sometimes not. See FlashChip Tutor site to read up on flash chip grading. Many people have found nothing more than hand written marker lettering – very bad sign! So the only true way to be sure of the flash drive chip is to take apart the item, decode the storage chip and then try to search it out. Be aware that manufacturers normally specify in bits, not btyes. If you see “Gb” they are talking bits, if you see “GB” they are talking bytes. 8 bits make a bytes so remember to divide by 8 if they use Gb.
Back to the reflashing software. In a lot of cases when the chip is recognized, an algorithm is used, an approximation. There are too many chip variations to be 100% precise. Much then depends on the version of software used. It also depends on how it has decided to detect bad sectors and so on. Also nand flash chips do not like to be repeatedly reflashed, ie low level format. It is usually done once in a flash chip’s life time. It has been observed in testing that the more you do low level formats on a chip, the more it shrinks in final capacity, especially when you different softwares or the wrong one for the usb controller. Flash nand chips are a completely different technology, they are not like hard disks.
The best comparision in true size is to test with H2testw 1.4 and also open the item and decode what the size is.
It is very important for everyone to understand, that while a usb flash drive “looks” the same, it can have different storage chips used. We’ve see this a lot. Remember they are recycling low capacity chips and factory rejects that should have gone to the furnance.
This brings up the last point. Trying to restore capacity can be an adventure, it can even be fun. However, any restored itme needs to be retested and never ever trusted. This means you can use it to transport files you have back ups of, or use to play movies or music that you have back ups of. Restored items should never be used to archive or store IMPORTANT INFORMATION ON! Not for one and only files! Ever!
At some point if we don’t have to continue hunting down and investigating so many fake flash sellers we would like to publish more information on nand flash technology so people will understand it better in simple terms. Such as wear leveling, life span, how data is written, why it is very difficult to recover data compared to a traditional hard disk, why they can in theory be so much faster in access speeds…

The characteristic of this are:
1. When u save a .flv and .jpg (as experienced), right after you can play and open them. Minutes later, those files can no longer be played and opened. And if you will try and try and try and try and try and try to open it up, the icon will avatar (i mean change) to folder icon with a chinese name and a strange GREEK file extension. They will show up a date of modification to be Feb. 03, 1979, November 04, 2035, Dec. 25, 2135. So amazing dates.
Please help me. My God. This is the first time I face this kind of problem.

The symptoms are typical for a fake flash drive. The h2testw errors are typically associated with memory errors that result from the use of cheap memory (rejects).
see articles on this blog about grades of memory.
The most likely cause of the memory scan failure is that the manufactures tool did not recognize the memory chip.
To fix this drive you will have to open up the drive, find the part number on the memory chip, search the internet to see if the the memory chip is identical to a chip the tool knows about, or, find a manufacture tool that knows about the memory chip.

The real capacity of your flash drive is not 4GB. 736MB indicates a poor quality 1GB flash chip.
To repair this drive you are going to have to open it up verify the controller model number and the memory model number and find the correct repair tool.

I found that you cant download files from the “flashboot” site using IE8 so I tried Firefox 3.5 which works fine.
In terms of all the Ameco downloads available to fix MXT8208 none worked for me. Because my drive is enclosed in a steel case I’ve not been able to take it apart to check chips so I’m stuck awaiting for ispiration. As it appears to be only 499MB so its not the end of the world. I’m trying to claim the cost of drive back from Paypal who are delaying refund for some unknown reason.

The most recent tool available for the controller appears to be Ameco_MW8209_6208E_1.1.1.5_20091015 UdTools. It doesn’t support this flashchip though. I was a bit stubborn and tried to find another chip in the list that might be compatible, I don’t care terribly much about wearing out the chip with some more lowlevel formats anyway.
..I didn’t find any compatible chip. After trying to format it as a MT29F16G08CBABA_2GB (..at least the size, blocks and pages seemed to match) UdTools continued far beyond 100% (I saw it reaching 180% and it must have gone some further), a few minutes later I took another look at my laptop and UdTools crashed. Now when I try to format it with UdTools, it says “Error: Download Config Table Failed!”. This error is already shown directly after starting UdTools. ChipGenius can still see the VID and PID though. Linux believes it is a 1.6GB drive but can’t do anything with it.
I did find that some extra options can be unlocked by going to the Manuf Setting tab in UdTools, clicking “Manual Select” and then pressing ctrl+x and ctrl+c. But I can’t find any option that makes is succeed in downloading the config table (whatever that is). I have a feeling it must be technically possible to just force some settings down the controllers throat or to reset it, but there doesn’t seem to be any option or tool available to do it. I’m thinking maybe (if there really is no software) it could be done by putting some voltage on specific pins of the MW8209. Unfortunately I can’t find a datasheet for it. Help is, obviously, appreciated.

Spectek and Micron chips are basically equivalent flash chips. For example NAND flash chip SpecTek FBNL63A51K3WG-AF equiv. to Micron MT29F4G08MAA).
The primary difference between chips with identical technical details (CE, block size etc)is the information the chips return in result to a “READ ID” request.
The spectek results of the READ ID query command (90h) will return values of B5h, 2Ch, or 89h in Byte 0 (manufacture id field)
Some repair tool packages (rar packages) contain lists of supported chips and their flash ids – you can use this for the basis for your research.
What the manufacture tools does to determine the nand chip details is do a read id and use this information to lookup detailed information about the chip in a ini file. The device id is a lookup into the ini file. For example the micron mt29f64g08taa has a flash id of 2cd7d53e which can be identified in the ini file as [2cd7d53edd]
Not sure if this would work for you. You could try and edit the ini file that contains the flash disk configuration info. Basically change the device id key (info within the []) from the micron id string to the spectek string associated with your chip.

The smartest thing to do is to wait for a new version of UdTools.

I actually have almost the same 16GB fake USB flash drive as you posted here, bought on eBay from seller mamaseller2009 in one of the final days of his scam. However, I didn’t realize until recently when I tried creating repartitioning the device and the second partition kept getting lost and corrupted did I begin to suspect the device wasn’t actually 2GB.
In your very helpful post above, you identified all the correct tools and values to fix this device. VID = 1221, PID = 3234, the controller is MW8209 (ChipGenius actually told me that my chip vendor was “micov(???)” and chip part #MXT8208, but inspection of the actual chip is MW8209), my flashchip was covered with glue and couldn’t be read, but I peeled most of the glue off with a razor and was able to read “FBNL63ANAK3” (I presume the last two letters came off with the glue), H2testW seemed to find inly 1.9G was okay. Your photos, as well, are almost identical to my unit, except the 2nd and 3rd line printed on the controller are different.
Anyway, I just fixed my USB Flash, and I have to tell you first that the Ameco_MW8209_6208E_1.1.1.5_20091015 UdTools you mentioned does actually support this chip. However, IT DOES NOT WORK ON WINDOWS VISTA OR WINDOWS 7. I tried it first on those, and it saw no supported flash. However, on Windows XP, the USB stick was immediately recognized. You can see the date/time of the last format by right clicking on the bar area, clicking on the channel # button just gave me an “Error reading USB message” (but restarting the app. that didn’t re-appear), and clicking “Start ALL” ran progress through to 100% and then announced FINISHED and my stick actually gained a bad sector but also 1MB in the process. Since I didn’t copy the Serial # or Vendor info into the Manufacturer info on page 2, that has changed now, but who cares?
Nevertheless, I almost didn’t go through this procedure since there I already knew there is a simpler way to get around this problem—reducing the primary partition size to the actual chip size and leaving the fake capacity unallocated. Since I discovered this problem partially by trying to partition the chip that was my first choice (although I also was having some files on the primary partition go annoyingly corrupt on me too).
Anyway, my flash is working much faster now and H2testW shows no errors. Thank you very much for sharing your information, because of the striking similarity I was brave enough to go the extra distance and actually click that START ALL button to make the fix the right way.
SUMMARY: You need to use Windows XP to fix the flash. A security feature in the newer OS’s must be blocking the utility.

Are you sure it’s an MW6209 and not an MW8209? In case of an MW8209, try Ameco_MW8209_6208E_1.1.1.5_20091015. If that doesn’t work you have to wait, your flashchip (the big chip on the other side of the PCB) is not yet supported.

Use Capacity priority in the tool if nocthing helps.

It took me a while to find the working link, and then translate it, but as I’m definitely lumbered with two fakes…supposed to be 32B and are in fact 4GB – I kept at it. The tool has recognised them and hopefully will reset them them to 4GB. Could be worse! Have received paypal refund: eBay seller was “overseabridge”

The only information I found on the internet indicates that the memory chip MSV12811ATP is 128Mbit or 16Mbyte. There are posts on flashboot.ru also asking for solutions for this chip and no indications of any solutions.
What did h2testw report as memory OK?
For this small amount of memory it is not worth fixing or looking for solutions.

I can’t find any sw that is recognising my device, I guess the problem is the revision (3.0).
Previously I managed to fix devices with rev. 2.4 and 2.5.

I would repair a drive that shows a large amount of bad sectors i.e shows 3.2GB OK with a hammer. That is the best thing to do with a flash drive that contains poor quality memory chip.
If you insist on repairing open the flash drive and confirm the chip models numbers and then look for the software.

I opened the stick, finding a MW8219 chip.
It has been very easy then to find the proper formatting tool in flashboot.ru:

The memory has been recognised immediately as a 4 GB (MT29F32G08CBAAA_4GB).
Unfortunately, the memory was badly damaged and only 50%(!) of the sectors has been detected as good. Moreover, I had to format with the option “Scan priority: quality first”, otherwise, after formatting, some sectors were not working, failing the H2testw test.
H2testw gives now the following result:
2016 MB
Test finished without errors.
You can now delete the test files *.h2w or verify them again.
Writing speed: 8.44 MByte/s
Reading speed: 37.3 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
However, better having a 2 GB stick than nothing! For sure I am not going to store in it any important data, just songs for my MP3 player (of which I have the backup, of course!).

Another fake usb stick fixed!
I opened the case, noticed a MW8209 chip, went to flashboot.ru and downloaded the suggested SW:
Ameco_MW8209_1.1.1.0_090424
After reflashing, only 2GB were available, better than nothing!

You will have to try manual method. Open the flash drive with care and decode the usb controller chip and flash storage chip. Then check the categories here, followed by a visit to the russian site for the best software tools that exist for the usb controller family.

You will have to open the usb flash drive to decode the usb controller chip and usb flash drive storage chip.
If H2testw reported the real capacity is 2GB it is probably not worth the effort. Go after a refund for your seller instead.
