Alcor VID = 058F PID = 6387 Repair Fake Flash Drive Solution
Posted by inspectortech on December 12, 2008
FixFakeFlash – solution Alcor controller (chip set not mentioned) identified with VID = 058F PID = 6387, fake flash drive. The drive tested and repaired was from eBay Fake Flash Seller chaiching28. Advertised as 16GB, it’s true capacity was 4GB. This fake flash drive can be repaired using the following information.
Read About VID PID Repairing Counterfeit Flash Drives – Steps To Succeed before proceeding to solution.
UK-David:
1. eBay Fake Flash Seller chaiching28
2. New 16GB 16 GB USB Drive 2.0 memory stick pen drive d
For your information I bought a “16GB” Flash Drive from chaiching28 Although windows explorer properties showed it as a 16GB, it was a 4GB. Data recording continues until the 16GB limit is reached but then only the latest 4GB is partially recoverable.
Following info and threads from various discussion groups, I used ‘ChipGeniusV2.64’ from MyDigit.cn (.rar file needs opening with 7-zip or similar) and identified that it is a SAMSUNG (flash drive), VID:058F, PID 6387.
H2testw produced the following test result:
The media is likely to be defective.
3.9 GByte OK (8207080 sectors)
11.6 GByte DATA LOST (24528152 sectors)
Details:0 KByte overwritten (0 sectors)
0 KByte slightly changed (< 8 bit/sector, 0 sectors)
11.6 GByte corrupted (24528152 sectors)
0 KByte aliased memory (0 sectors)
First error at offset: 0x00000000fa75d000
Expected: 0x00000000fa75d000
Found: 0x0000000000000000
H2testw version 1.3
Writing speed: 7.46 MByte/s
Reading speed: 5.16 MByte/s
H2testw v1.4
Then after several false trails I used AlcorMP_080829 to successfully reprogram the drive back to its true 4GB (with warnings that limits reached at 4GB)
During all of this I was in contact with caiching28, and he finally agreed that as the pen was only 25% of the stated capacity he should give me a 75% refund. He has. Originally I was asking for a full refund, but as I had then reprogrammed the pen it seemed unfair.
FixFakeFlash:
We hope that the information provided by UK-David helps you to fix your drive from fake flash seller chaiching28, for the model listed as “New 16GB 16 GB USB Drive 2.0 memory stick pen drive d”.
The information should also be is valid as a solution for other drives that have the same VID and PID.
What UK-David didn’t know at the time was that chaiching28 was no innocent seller victim. chaiching28 knew exactly what he was doing but he hoped and counted on UK-David not knowing and of course behaving in a civilized manner. UK-David was more than fair.
SOSFakeFake has been investigating the issue for over 6 months now. Fake flash sellers on eBay used to have very easy time convincing a buyer it was a factory defect or that they didn’t know and play the sympathy strings of “I am a victim too”. Unfortunately since the FrankenFlash Project has been setting up websites to help victims and increase awareness they are finding this more difficult to do. We will be publishing more on UK-David’s story at SOSFakeFlash in late December 2008.

This worked for me..
Disassembled Fake 16GB drive and visually Confirmed
Memory Chip Samsung 825 k9gag08u0m pcb0 (No Visible Serial Number)
Memory Controller Alcor AU6984
Successfully reflashed drive as 2G using AlcorMP(08.02.28) downloaded from 4Shared.com
Based on VID, PID and controller paring I expected that AlcorMP(080424) AU698X would be the appropriate flashing program. It did not work.
The LED on the flash drive is always on, not sure if this is significant. However, based on the fact that the memory chip did not show a visible serial number I suspect this is a factory reject and will throw it in the garbage. If I kept the drive I would only store files, that I did not have other copies of, and use the 7Zip program to save files on the flash drives as it will detect data errors when reading data from the drive.
Some of the details:

I have a USB flash drive bought on eBay as a 16GB drive, and confirmed with H2testw 1.4 as a 2GB drive. I was able to successfully low-level reformat it, partly using information from this page, as the first VID and PID I found matched those of this page.
I bought the drive from eBay seller Pandachinchin, who is no longer a registered eBay member. There is a page on the sosfakeflash site with information about this seller, and helpful images of the drives he sold on eBay. My drive is pictured on the seller information page (see replies at the bottom of page for identifying marks of my drive): http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/2009/05/12/pandachinchin-ebay-fake-flash-seller-alert-hong-kong/
I used tools listed and with download links on the following page to fix this drive: http://sosfakeflash.wordpress.com/2008/11/01/where-to-download-alcor-tools-to-fix-fake-usb-flash-drives/
Specifically, I used ALCOR AU9386 V1.10 to identify the proper VID and PID of the drive, and AlcorMP-080829 to low-level format the drive.
Details from before the low-level format:
ChipGenius 3.0 on Windows 7 64-bit
VID 058F
PID 6387
Serial# 97DEF94A
Chip Part# AU6980~AU6983
ChipGenius 3.0 on Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit
VID 058F
PID 9380
Serial# [blank]
Chip Part# AU6983
AlcorMP_UDF 1.10 08.08.29 (on Windows XP – didn’t work on Windows 7)
VID 058F
PID 9381
Firmware Version: D502
Controller Type: 6986
Device Capacity: 0.000MB
LoadDriver.exe (from the AlcorMP-080829.zip file)
VID 058F
PID 6387
I could not change these numbers with LoadDriver.exe, although the page linked above instructed “3. Install Proper VID & PID with LoadDriver.exe.”
Details from after the low-level format:
ChipGenius 3.0 on Windows 7 64-bit
VID 058F
PID 9381
Serial# 5&&21E739F&&0&&3 [also read 00000000 one time]
Chip Vendor: Alcor(??)
Chip Part-Number: AU9386~AU6986
AlcorMP_UDF 1.10 08.08.29 (on Windows XP)
VID 058F
PID 9381
Firmware Version: E34B
Controller Type: 6986
Device Capacity: 2005.00MB
LoadDriver.exe (from the AlcorMP-080829.zip file)
VID 058F
PID 6387
Still reads the same, in Windows XP and Windows 7, after the low-level format.
It appears to be working correctly as a 2GB drive now. H2testw 1.4 shows it to currently have a size of 2004 MB. I have not extensively tested it. I have been unable to identify the memory chip, and have not opened it to find out.
I hope this information might help someone fix their drive.

maxie cruse,
If you do not get information for:
Chip Vendor: ????IC
Chip Part-Number:
You have only one option to find the right tool, you will have to carefully open the item, decode the little controller chip and the flash memory storage chip. Write it all down carefully then proceed to search this site and the Russian site for a matching low level software.
When you find a software and download, check that ecc is not open before you proceed with a low level reformatting.

How to ensure that ECC is not open? When i opt for low level format, against the ECC dropdown list box, i have these values:
0
1(default)
2
3
4
Currently the value is set to 0. Is it considered or closed?
Thanks.
